Friday Night funkin' is a 2D rhythm game made by PhantomArcade, NInjumuffin99, Kawai Sprite, and Evilsk8r. It was originally made for a Newgrounds game jam but it quickly grew in popularity which prompted the crew to start working on "the full ass game" as they like to say. The fun, old school cartoon style of art and the animations are done by David Brown aka Phantomarcade wth the assistance of Evilsk8r. The sick ass tunes were made by Isaac Garcia aka Kawai Sprite, and the programming was done by the muffin man, aka Cameron Taylor aka Ninjamuffin.
Currently, There are 22 songs divided into weeks with 3 songs each plus the tutorial. Weeks? What the hell are weeks you say? Weeks are the levels. Each level has 3 songs and there are currently 7 levels, with hopefully some more on the way soon!
The story follows our protagonist Boyfriend who just wants to do a lil hanky panky with his hot girlfriend Girlfriend but her parents are NOT having it, so in order to deal with him the parents put him to the test by throwing many challenges his way, which are resolved through rap battling.
Boyfriend is the protagonist of FNF and the character you play as. He is a 19 year old college drop out with a passion for rapping. He has ADHD and social anxiety. He's also very fucking stupid. He can be very cocky and very much a show off. Most of what's known about him stems back to his lack of intelligence and common sense. Phantom occassionally throws random facts about the young rapper when the fans asks for them, but none of them are important enough to mention here. Basically, he's a stupid rapper with stupid blue hair that got with the wrong girl at the wrong time
Girlfriend is boyfriend's partner. She's like our second main character. She can be seen sitting on her speakers in the background of every week, bobbing her head and supporting her mans from the sidelines. She is one out of the 3 characters that speak in the game. Girlfriend is also 19 years old and is also very dumb just like her second half. She also has autism. But she is not at all what she seems. Girlfriend is actually a a demon even though she doesn't look it. Her power level is unknown, but it is hinted at that she is more powerful than she looks.
Bopeebo | Fresh | Dadbattle
Daddy Dearest is one of our main antagonist and the opponent of the first week. He also appears in week 5 along with Mommy Mearest (who we will get to next!). He is the father of Girlfriend and is visibly a demon unlike her. He is an ex rockstar and is described as a very evil and careless man. He will go to extreme measures to get what he wants, even if that means someone has to die. The "someone" is typically Boyfriend.
Satin Panties | High | M.I.L.F
Mommy Mearest is the mother of Girlfriend and the opponent of the 4th week. She is also our second main antagonist along with Daddy D. Mommy Mearest was a successful popstar. Apparently she is much more ruthless than Daddy Dearest when it comes to her tendencies of wanting to kill boyfriend. Personality wise, there isn't much detail about her.
Senpai | Roses
Senpai is the antagonist of week 6. He is the protagonist of Girlfriend's favorite video game which was a visual novel/dating simualator. The main characters were somehow transported into the video game (preasumably by the demon powers of one of the parents) which is what allowed the rap battles to take place. At first, Senpai appeared to be a charming young man who just wanted to win Girlfriend's heart. But once you defeat him, his nice guy persona drops and he turns into a vicious, angry man ready to tear your balls off.
Thorns
Spirit is the second antagonist of week 6 and is the last song. Though he burst out of Senpai after beating him in song 2, Spirit and Senpai are two separate beings. Senpai is sctrictly a video game character while Spirit is a real soul that was trapped inside the video by Daddy D. His motive for battling you/Boyfriend is for him to escape the video game and have you replace him.
Monster | Winter Horrorland
Monster is the second of the three characters that speak words in the game. He doesn't have a week of his own. He appears in weeks 2 and 5 as the last songs. His songs are the only two songs not made by Kawai Sprite and are instead made by Bassetfilms. He is an insane monster that can alter the perception of reality to trick his victims. He really wants to eat Gf and Bf. Both his songs contain gruesome lyrics about how he would cook and eat them. Also his head looks like a lemon lol.
Spookeez | South
Skid and Pump are from a popular web cartoon called "Spooky Month" made by Sr Pelo. They are the opponents of week 2. They were told by Monster to win GF in a rap battle against Bf. They had no idea his intentions were ill willed because they are 2 stupid kids. If you wanna know more about them just watch spooky month. It's damn good cartoon in my opinion. To shorten it, they are simply two naive kids who rarely ever see the bad in people and just want to enjoy spooky month.
Pico is an OG Newgrounds character that has been around since 1999. He is from the Newgrounds game "Pico's School" created by Tom Fulp, the father of Newgrounds. Now I could talk about him forever because I'm in love with him but for the sake of this I'll only talk about his involvement with FNF. Pico is the opponent of week 3. He is the hitman that Daddy D hired to kill boyfriend, but it turns out that Boyfriend and Pico have a romantic past with each other, so Pico decided to spare his life and they had a rap battle instead. Personality wise, Pico is a bit of an asshole. He is impulsive and reckless, but he has many skills, he's smart, and has impressive gunmanship.
Ugh | Guns | Stress
Tankman is another Newgrounds OG. He is from a Newgrounds miniseries called "Tankmen" created by JohnnyUtah and is LITERALLY the face of Newgrounds, a spot in which he took from Pico. He is the third character that speaks and he has animated cutscenes! Tankman is the opponent for week 7. Gf and Bf end up in Tankman's army base after a crash landing (i think) and instead of killing them he decides to have a rap battle instead because he was bored. Tankman is a vulgar soldier that on the surface just seems like a cock joke-loving asshole but he could and would totally kill you if you crossed his path.
I used to think Friday NIght Funkin was a cringey, stupid piece of shit game. I thought the weird beep bop music was ridiculous. So I avoided it lol. Then one day in like February of 2021 I checked it out myself and holy shit. I will NEVER forget the first time I heard the songs. I swear I felt true love the first time I heard Bopeebo and Fresh for the first time. It was a type of joy I will never feel again.
I think for me it's really the music that does it for me. I love the characters, the silly way the fling their bodies around from position to position when they're singing, the art style of it all, but the music is just?????? Immaculate. I can't even describe how much I love the noises these fictional characters create. There is not a single bad song. Every song is unique and tasty in it's own way. Who knew a bunch of beeps and bops can sound so good?
Even if my love for this game were to ever die out, I know the music will still forever hold a special, funky little space in my heart. I don't know if there's anything else in the world that could possibly bring me the joy that this game brings me...which sounds kinda sad ngl. BUT WE'RE NOT GONNA OPEN THAT CAN OF WORMS!!!!!!!!
